Fiscal Stewardship, Fair Funding Critical for Next State Budget, Says Bashline
February 4, 2026
HARRISBURG – Tuesday, Gov. Josh Shapiro delivered his state budget address to outline his $53.26 billion proposal for Fiscal Year 2026-27 – a 5.4% increase in spending over the current fiscal year. Rep. Josh Bashline (R-Clarion/Armstrong) released the following statement, urging fiscal discipline and fair funding for the 63rd District:
“Just how it was last year, the governor’s proposal is not based in reality. It spends well past our means and will take $4.58 billion out of the Rainy Day Fund, a resource House Republicans fought so hard to build up in case of emergencies.
“He is also calling for new taxes and changes to the current tax structure totaling $1.88 billion in new revenue, primarily generated through taxing skill games and recreational marijuana, while also calling for a minimum wage increase to $15 an hour for non-tipped workers and $9 per hour for tipped workers.
“Exercising discipline ensures taxpayers will keep more of their hard-earned dollars at a time when prices are running out of control. As families feel the tensions from the tightening of financial belts, they deserve necessary relief to ensure they don’t have to pick and choose which necessities they can pay for.
“In the district I’m so honored to serve, we love and appreciate our communities. During my short time, the 63rd District has not received our fair share of taxpayer funds to improve our communities. Our tax dollars need to stay in Clarion and Armstrong counties so we can get a good return on our investments for townships, first responders, schools and more.
“If the budget does not satisfy these requirements, I’ll be a definitive ‘no’ on passage. Budget negotiations will begin soon, and I hope my feedback is included in the final product.”
